y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>A tightness settles at the front of the hip, right where the thigh meets the torso, and most people who feel it assume it&#8217;s their back. It isn&#8217;t, not exactly. It&#8217;s the hip flexors, the muscle group running from the lower spine down through the pelvis to the top of the thigh (the psoas and iliacus, if you want the names), whose entire job is to lift your knee toward your chest, a movement almost nobody sitting at a desk for eight hours a day is doing often enough.</p><p>Sitting shortens them, not dramatically, not overnight, but steadily, the way anything shortens when it&#8217;s never asked to lengthen, and a shortened hip flexor pulls the front of the pelvis down and forward, tipping the lower back into a slight, permanent arch it was never built to hold all day. That&#8217;s the ache. It&#8217;s one we <em>all</em> know, every one of us who sits at desks and on our laptops, and it&#8217;s an ache that sits low and dull, and most people can&#8217;t actually trace its origin back to Drop into a low lunge, one knee forward and bent, the other leg extended behind you with the top of that foot resting on the floor, and gently press the hips forward until you feel the stretch along the front of the back leg&#8217;s hip. Hold for a minute, then switch sides, and do it daily if you can, since the effect compounds each time you return to it. Posture tends to shift before the ache does, the pelvis no longer being dragged forward, finding it easier to sit up straight on its own.</p><p>Do it at the desk, by the bed, or while the kettle boils. It costs nothing and takes less time than making the coffee that had you sitting there in the first place, which is more than most fixes for a day spent sitting can claim.</p><div It has been there so long it has started to feel like the baseline, a slight clench in the jaw, shoulders that sit a little too high, a belly that never quite lets go. You do not notice it until someone points it out, or until you actually release it and realise, with some surprise, how much you were holding.</p><p>Progressive muscle relaxation has been around since the 1920s, developed by an American physician named Edmund Jacobson, who noticed that physical tension and mental anxiety tend to travel together and that deliberately releasing one has a measurable effect on the other. It has since become one of the better-studied techniques in the stress management toolkit, used in everything from clinical anxiety treatment to pre-sleep protocols to sports psychology. Deliberately releasing tension after is not the same as simply trying to relax. When you actively clench first, you are giving the nervous system a clear contrast to work with. The release registers as a signal, not merely an absence of effort, and the body responds accordingly. It is the difference between turning off a light and watching the room go dark.</p><p>The best time for this is the end of the day, before sleep, or whenever you have been at a desk or in back-to-back conversations for too long and the tension has gone quiet and invisible. In three minutes, you should feel it shift immediately. On one side, a growing desire to switch off entirely, to tap into nature and stillness and nervous system reset, and on the other, a surge in optimisation, biohacking, diagnostics, wearables, and data. What both camps have in common is that they&#8217;re responses to the same underlying feeling that something in how we live feels out of balance.</p><p>I&#8217;ve spent the last two weeks firmly in the second camp, with a continuous glucose monitor stuck to my upper arm and an app tracking every spike, dip, and recovery in real time. What I learned surprised me. I&#8217;m not diabetic, and by most measures, my diet is pretty good. I cook whole foods, I&#8217;m conscious of what I eat, I&#8217;ve spent years building a relationship with my body through movement, Ayurveda, and a general attentiveness to how things feel. So when I went in, I wasn&#8217;t expecting big revelations.</p><p>A note: I&#8217;m a 43-year-old woman, and my takeaways are specific to my body, age, metabolism, and baseline habits. What stabilises my glucose will not necessarily stabilise yours.</p><h3><strong>First, what is a CGM?</strong></h3><p>A CGM is a small sensor on the upper arm that continuously reads glucose levels in the fluid just beneath the skin and feeds that data to an app in real time. This technology has existed for decades, by the way, and has been life-changing (and often life-saving) for people with severe diabetes. What&#8217;s changed recently is accessibility: several companies now sell CGMs directly to people without a diagnosis, positioning the device as a metabolic health tool rather than a medical one. We&#8217;ve seen a surge in people using them to support efforts to move, eat, and just live better. The options in India are reasonably varied. Abbott&#8217;s FreeStyle Libre is the most established and widely available, Ultrahuman&#8217;s M1 pairs a FreeStyle Libre sensor with an app built specifically for non-diabetics and oriented toward lifestyle insight rather than clinical management, which is why I ended up choosing it, GoodFlip is an Indian-made option delivering readings every three minutes at a more accessible price point, and Dexcom&#8217;s G7 is available for those who want clinical-grade accuracy.</p><h3><strong>It&#8217;s also worth introducing the Glucose Goddess here</strong></h3><p>Jessie Inchausp&#233;, the French biochemist with five million followers, built her platform on the premise that glucose spikes are the central villain of modern health. A lot of her advice is both sensible and simple: meal sequencing, aka eating fibre and protein before carbohydrates, has evidence behind it, particularly for people with impaired glucose metabolism. A post-meal walk is well-supported, and the savoury breakfast recommendation is just good advice for everyone. However, her central premise, that glucose spikes are dangerous and must be minimised in healthy people, has been contested by multiple dietitians and endocrinologists who say that for generally metabolically healthy people, a post-meal rise is a normal physiological response. A mango will raise your glucose, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t eat mangoes (thank god, for mango season is upon us!).</p><p>None of this makes using a CGM a bad idea; it&#8217;s just post-surgery and low movement, which turned out to be sort of useful because it gave me a floor to measure everything else against. Ghee before psyllium husk in the morning produced no spike, but reverse the order, and there was one, because the fat creates a coating in the gut that slows everything that follows. Apple cider vinegar in water before a meal (drunk through a straw, protect your enamel!) visibly flattened the post-meal spike. Vegetables before protein before carbs: the same meal eaten in a different order produced a measurably different response, which is the part that seemed almost too simple to be true? down in a much gentler arc, because movement pulls glucose into the muscles before it has a chance to accumulate in the bloodstream. It&#8217;s the sort of thing you&#8217;ve heard, anecdotally, forever, right? &#8220;A gentle stroll after a meal&#8230;&#8221; and yet I&#8217;d always disparaged it as the sort of nonsense that doctors recommend to the aged and infirm. How very, very ignorant and wrong I was. Consider me schooled and grateful for the lesson.</p><p>The thing I didn&#8217;t expect: I thought I&#8217;d discover I was reactive to sugar, but what I actually discovered is that I&#8217;m much more reactive to processed carbohydrates. Instant noodles on a flight home produced the most dramatic spike I recorded across the entire two weeks, higher than ice cream, higher than rice, higher than anything else I ate. The reason is that processing strips out everything that would normally slow digestion, the fibre, the structure, the resistance, so what&#8217;s left hits the bloodstream almost immediately and all at once. Tequila, by contrast, barely registered because clean spirits temporarily suppress glucose production in the liver. This isn&#8217;t an endorsement, just what the data showed.</p><p>The night I slept three hours, my curve the next day was jagged regardless of what I ate, because stress, poor sleep, and cortisol are glucose drivers entirely independent of food, and it turns out a heated argument can trigger a glucose spike equivalent in metabolic terms to eating hummus and carrots. The body, it seems, does not distinguish between what kinds of things stress you out.</p><h3><strong>The lesson I&#8217;m keeping</strong></h3><p>The CGM didn&#8217;t change what I eat as much as it changed the architecture around eating, the sequencing, the timing, the walk after&#8230; small structural shifts rather than dietary overhauls. Those were the differences between a curve that looks like a mountain range and one that looks like a gentle wave. A more useful concept than spikes, and one the Ultrahuman app introduced me to, is glucose variability: not where your glucose sits on average, but how far and how frequently it rises and falls across the day, which shifts the focus from any single meal to the overall pattern, and is both more accurate and considerably less anxiety-inducing as a frame.</p><div It&#8217;s actually, in our fast-paced world, fairly important to know. Your body has a built-in mechanism for coming down from stress that works on its own, but sometimes needs a little extra support. Most of us just never learned how to use it deliberately.</p><p>The vagus nerve is the key. It runs from your brainstem all the way down to your gut, touching your heart, your lungs, your digestive system on the way, and it governs how quickly your body shifts out of threat mode and back into calm. The vagus nerve passes through the muscles of your throat and larynx. When you hum or say &#8216;voo&#8217; out loud, the vibration activates those muscles and sends a direct signal down the nerve, nudging your system toward its parasympathetic state, which is the rest-and-digest counterpart to fight-or-flight. Close your mouth, take a breath in, and on the exhale, hum. Let the sound be low and steady. Feel the vibration in your chest and throat. Do it for thirty seconds, which is about five or six slow exhales. You can also try saying &#8216;voo&#8217; on the exhale, drawing the sound out as long as your breath allows, which produces a slightly deeper vibration and tends to work quickly.</p><p>The logistics are the good part: you do not need to be anywhere particular or in any particular state of mind. In the car before you go in. In the lift. In the bathroom before you walk back into the room. On the exhale while you wait for your coffee to brew. Thirty seconds, no equipment, and no one needs to know.</p><p>This is a good one to keep on hand for days when it's needed. As daylight fades, your body depends on a drop in light exposure to trigger melatonin production, the hormone that tells your brain it is safe to rest. Blue light from screens is particularly disruptive because it tells your brain it is still afternoon: melatonin stalls, sleep onset delays, and you lie in bed physically exhausted but mentally refusing to land. The lightest meal of the day is best saved for the evening rather than the beginning of it. Not at the airport, not in the taxi to the hotel when you&#8217;re thinking, ah, I could nap, and definitely not even on the first evening when you&#8217;re still running on arrival adrenaline and the novelty of a new city and a minibar you are definitely not going to touch. No, it arrives at 2am on day two, fully alert and inexplicably hungry, staring at a ceiling in a room you have to think about for a second before you remember which country you&#8217;re in.</h3><p>For those of us who city-hop within India regularly, there&#8217;s a version of this that doesn&#8217;t get enough airtime; here, the flights are short enough that you can&#8217;t really sleep, long enough to be disruptive, and the time difference is zero, which should mean that nothing changes, but somehow everything still feels slightly&#8230; off. Land in Delhi from Mumbai at 10pm after a full day of meetings, and try to sleep in a hotel room at 11. The body is confused, but in a low-grade way. Now multiply that by three cities in four days, which is a week that certain people reading this will find extremely familiar, and you arrive home feeling like you have been somewhere much further away.</p><p>Then there is actual international travel, and whoopsadaisy, that is a different situation entirely. Your body has a clock, and it hates crossing time zones. The circadian rhythm is controlled by a tiny cluster of cells in the brain roughly the size of a grain of rice, and it governs everything: when cortisol rises to wake you, when melatonin arrives to send you to sleep, when you feel sharp or foggy, hungry or not. When you fly across time zones this system doesn&#8217;t update the way your phone does. It keeps running on the schedule you left behind, which is why you&#8217;re wide awake at midnight and falling asleep face-first into your croissant at breakfast, and why eight hours of sleep in the wrong window won&#8217;t feel like eight hours because the deep, restorative stages of it are the first to go. Long-haul travel also increases inflammation in the body, which is where that dull, heavy, can&#8217;t-shake-it feeling actually comes from. The minibar raid at 4am, meanwhile, is just your hunger signals going completely rogue.</p><h3><strong>This is your simple checklist to still feel good:</strong></h3><p>The single fastest reset available to you is morning light in your new time zone, and nothing else you do will come close to matching it. </p><p>Get outside within an hour or two of waking, let the light reach your eyes (sunglasses defeat the purpose, save them for later), and stay out for ten to twenty minutes. Natural daylight suppresses melatonin and signals the brain that the day has truly begun. This one intervention alone can shift your internal clock by several hours, and it costs nothing, which feels almost offensive given how much the wellness industry has tried to make jet lag powerful anchors for the whole system.</p><p>Move your body in the morning, even if it&#8217;s the last thing you want to do, because it raises cortisol appropriately and clears that heavy, foggy feeling in a way that lying in bed definitely will not.</p><p>Go easy on the caffeine: it helps in the first half of the day and actively works against you after 2pm, delaying melatonin release and A short walk. Yes, this is annoyingly simple advice. Even more annoying: it works, and be silly to ignore it.</p><p>For the advanced planners, shifting your sleep and wake times by thirty to sixty minutes in the right direction for two or three days before international travel makes the first forty-eight hours considerably less brutal. It costs nothing but a little effort and the mild social inconvenience of going to bed at 9pm the night before a flight.</p><h3><strong>For the city-hoppers</strong></h3><p>The domestic version responds well to the same interventions, scaled down. </p><p>Morning light on arrival, eating at local mealtimes even when your body is petitioning for a meal at 11pm, and the thing that helps most and gets ignored most: not catching up on everything the moment you land. The laptop can wait forty-five minutes. Go outside first. Your inbox will still be catastrophic when you get back, but you will be slightly better equipped to face it.</p><p>Jet lag resolves on its own, but it can take a week or more, which is a significant chunk of most trips and approximately all of a domestic work sprint. Morning light, local mealtimes, movement, and sensible caffeine are not difficult things to implement; they don&#8217;t require a supplement stack or a special sleep programme, they just require doing them in the right order at the right time. This is one of the habits at the centre of it.</p><p>We asked her about the post-meal walk, a ritual she describes as genuinely non-negotiable, and she explained it to us and why it&#8217;s a little habit stack that isn&#8217;t going anywhere anytime soon.</p><p>&#8220;So you know how I spoke about the link between sugar and cancer cells? One of the things these rogue cells thrive on is sugar. It can come from various things, of course, not just dessert, as many people erroneously think, but yes, some spikes are worse than others. In general, though, every time you eat, you do experience some kind of sugar spike. The idea is to slow the spike and plateau the peak, which essentially means you&#8217;re just living better, in a way that allows your body to burn energy more slowly and in a smarter fashion, making you less susceptible to mood swings, exhaustion, burnout, and, in the long term, illness. Many things can help with this &#8211; eating vegetables or a green salad 20 minutes before a meal, adding protein to an otherwise all-carb dish, other food hacks, and &#8211; you guessed it &#8211; walking for as little as 10 minutes after eating. While, of course, I incorporate preventive methods, I&#8217;ve also stuck to the walk. I live very close to a gorgeous park where I&#8217;m so lucky to be able to go for this, but even when I can&#8217;t, it&#8217;s up and down the living room for me. It also clears my head and gives me ideas for my writing. each time with a different strategy (patches, gum, a book everyone swears by, sheer determination, hypnotherapy, spite). Another friend is trying to stop picking at the skin on her fingers, a habit she has had since she was about seven that resurfaces whenever she is stressed. Given her current workload, this is basically all the time. She is doing quite well in the gaps between deadlines, which is to say she gets about four good days a month and spends the rest of the time with her hands looking like they have been in an altercation with a grater.</p><p>Among my immediate circle we have someone trying to go to the gym more (she keeps buying new gym clothes as a form of optimistic manifestation), someone trying to order less takeout (he has deleted and reinstalled Zomato more times than I care to count), someone trying to take up tennis (racket purchased, lessons booked, no actual tennis played), and approximately, er, everyone is trying to eat &#8216;better&#8217;. Oh, also a few people are attempting things on a more metaphysical plane, things like thinking more positively, or less worrying about things they cannot control, which is admirable but also how do It is not the first day, when motivation is still fresh. It is not even the first week, when you can still make encouraging noises at yourself. It is just a touch later than that, when you&#8217;re tired and work is noisy and suddenly you would really quite like a cigarette or some chocolate or decide pizza for dinner it is, so you can just not think about it for five minutes. We&#8217;ve all heard of the 21-day rule, but annoyingly, the alleged science that says it takes three weeks to form a habit didn&#8217;t actually come from a habit study. It came from a plastic surgeon in 1960 called Maxwell Maltz who noticed that his patients took about three weeks to adjust to their new faces after surgery and wrote about it in a self-help book called Psycho-Cybernetics (which, I mean, what a title). That observation became a rule, the rule became a myth, and the myth has been rattling around ever since giving people a convenient timeline and then a convenient excuse when it does not work. The full range, depending on the complexity of the habit, runs from 18 days on the easy end to something like 254 days for the genuinely difficult ones, which means a lot of us have been giving up on habits that were, biologically speaking, about halfway to actually sticking.</p><p>My friend who is trying to quit smoking is currently on day eleven, but she says it feels different this time. Something has shifted, she cannot quite explain it, but it does not feel like she is white-knuckling her way through every hour. I asked her what changed and she said honestly she does not know, she is just doing it, which is both the least helpful answer and also possibly the only one that matters.</p><p>Because here is what the people who actually succeed at this seem to have in common: it is not superior willpower or better genetics or more time or a more supportive environment or a particularly good app. It is repetition. so it can get on with more interesting things. Every time you repeat a behaviour, your brain encodes it a little more deeply. That's how something that needs effort suddenly becomes something you just&#8230;do. So the trick, and it turns out the only trick, is to keep showing up.</p><p>The people who build habits that last, the genuinely annoying ones who just go to the gym three times a week without making a big production of it or post lengthy updates about their wellness journey, they tend to do a few things differently. They make the behaviour small enough that skipping it feels more effortful than doing it (put on gym clothes, that is the habit, the actual gym can follow or not). They attach it to something that already happens, something so embedded in the day that it does not require a decision (after coffee, before bed, on the walk to the metro station, during the bit where you are waiting for your computer to wake up and pretending to look busy). They do not treat a missed day as a failure, because the research is very clear that missing once does not materially affect the outcome, it is missing twice, then three times, that starts to unravel Eighty percent consistency, maintained over time, beats a flawless two-week streak followed by an existential crisis and giving up altogether. You do not need to be good at it every single day. You just need to be decent at it most days, and willing to start again when you are not.</p><p>That friend who is on day eleven without a cigarette is in that deeply unglamorous middle stretch where nothing feels automatic yet but the repetitions are doing the work under the surface, the bit where you just have to trust that showing up is enough even when it does not feel like anything is changing. She is going to be fine. And if she is not, if this attempt does not stick either, she will try again, because that is what we do. We keep trying, we keep failing, we keep starting over, and occasionally, if we are lucky and stubborn and willing to make it small enough and boring enough that it does not feel like a big deal, something sticks.</p><p>I am rooting for her.
